Pilates for Back Pain

Pilates is often recommend by healthcare professionals for chronic back pain as a method to help reduce the level of pain and to prevent recurrence.  Pilates is a great way to help strengthen the core muscles that form a girdle around the spine protecting it.

In the presence of chronic back pain the core muscle will not be functioning adequately. The core muscles are designed to stabilise the spine and pelvis and should switch on prior to any arm or leg movement to protect the spine. If the core muscles are not working correctly other muscles will try to compensate for them and it is this compensation which can contribute to chronic pain.

The core muscles can be retrained which can lead to a reduction in the pain and help prevent re-occurrence and this is the goal of the Pilates for Back Pain class.
