Workshop at Mountaineering Ireland Autumn Meet
Over the October Bank Holiday Mountaineering Ireland had their Autumn meet in Tollymore National Training Centre in Co Down. In conjunction with Northern Physiotherapist Andy McMullen, Karen Doyle, Physical Therapist, put a workshop together focusing on recovery strategies. Read more about what strategy works best...
Strategies such as contrast bathing, ice baths, heat baths, compression garments, self massage and cool down exercises were discussed and they scientific rationale behind them explained.
It was a practical workshop with all participants getting to try out the various strategies. Trying out the foam rollers to self massage tired legs was the stand out favourite. Ice baths (water at 10 degrees C) were found in the scientific reviews to be more effective than contrast bathing (hot and cold) or just a hot bath at speeding up recovery. Compression garments and massages help you feel less sore the next day, and a light cool down was also found to be a great method of speeding recovery up and reducing the pain and stiffness after exercise.
