Put your feet up in the Olympic Village
The report by Professor Burkett examined how many steps an athlete takes in their home environment, a home training camp, an international training camp, and the Olympic Village. The total number of steps per day was quantified using calibrated pedometers for 31 athletes.
There was a significant change in the daily step count when not at home, with an average increase of 13% steps while in the national training camp, an increase of 53% when in the international camp and an increase of 83% steps when in the Paralympic village.
The author concluded that to enable the maximum possible sporting performance at the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond, athletes should monitor their incidental walking and adjust levels of activity accordingly, and that design of the Olympic should consider mechanisms to reduce the amount of incidental walking required.
